(2018) LAMP72 20181Malmö Academy of Music
- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- The aim of this study is to examine how some of today’s voice teachers believe that vocal ideals in contemporary popular music affect voice tuition in upper secondary school, and how the teachers guide voice students to know and understand their singing voice. This is a qualitative interview study, with four voice teachers from upper secondary shools. The literature review illustrates which elements can shape vocal ideals and how the voices of children and teenagers are affected by vocal ideals in contemporary popular music. The results of the study suggest that some vocal ideals in contemporary popular music are detrimental to the development of young voices. Since they draw on sonorities that can only be achieved through studio... (More)

The results of the study suggest that some vocal ideals in contemporary popular music are detrimental to the development of young voices. Since they draw on sonorities that can only be achieved through studio technology, they create vocal ideals in young singers that are physically inobtainable. The informants in the study suggest alternative approaches which can allow students to develop their voices in ways that are more idiomatic and creative. (Less)
