- Timing är ett begrepp som är vanligt förekommande och högt värdesatt inom den afroamerikanska musiken. Trots det tycks det inte finnas en klar gemensam uppfattning kring vad begreppet egentligen innebär och i jämförelse med andra musikaliska element tycks även undervisningsmetodik i ämnet vara eftersatt. Denna studie syftar främst till att tydliggöra begreppet timing men också begreppet sväng som ofta sammankopplas med timing. Detta genom att undersöka hur begreppen definieras och används av musiker och pedagoger inom en afroamerikansk musiktradition. - Timing är ett begrepp som är vanligt förekommande och högt värdesatt inom den afroamerikanska musiken. Trots det tycks det inte finnas en klar gemensam uppfattning kring vad begreppet egentligen innebär och i jämförelse med andra musikaliska element tycks även undervisningsmetodik i ämnet vara eftersatt. Denna studie syftar främst till att tydliggöra begreppet timing men också begreppet sväng som ofta sammankopplas med timing. Detta genom att undersöka hur begreppen definieras och används av musiker och pedagoger inom en afroamerikansk musiktradition. Studien syftar också till att undersöka om det används särskilda pedagogiska metoder och övningar för att utveckla musikalisk timing och sväng. Undersökningen har skett genom en kvalitativ intervjustudie bestående av fyra stycken informanter. Resultatet visar att timing är ett stort begrepp som innehåller flera aspekter. I grund och botten handlar det dock om ett tidsligt förhållande mellan det som spelas och en rådande puls. Förhållandet kan vara matematiskt inriktad eller ha en uttrycksfull organisk inriktning och allt där i mellan. Resultatet visar också att det musikaliska samspelet mellan människor är en fundamental del i timing och att metoder så som att härma musikaliska förebilder är väsentlig del i att utveckla detta. - The term timing is often used and is highly regarded within the context of Afro-American music. Even so, there does not seem to be a clear common understanding of what the concept really means and also, in comparison with other musical elements, teaching methodology on the subject seems to be neglected. This study primarily aims to clarify the concept of timing, but also that of the term groove which is often linked to it, by examining how the concepts are defined and used by musicians and educators within an Afro-American music tradition. The study also aims to investigate whether there where special pedagogical methods and exercises for developing musical timing and groove. The result indicates that timing is a wide concept consisting of different aspects. The overall essence is however that timing is the relationship between what is played and a given pulse. It can be with a mathematical approach or an expressive organic approach and all in between. The result also shows that the musical interaction between people is a fundamental part of timing and that methods such as mimicking musical role models are an essential part of developing it. (Less)
