- Abstract (Swedish)
- The literature suggests that executives still doubt the real contribution of HR, and one reason for this is that it is difficult to measure the Return on Investment in HR activities. In addition to this, earlier studies on the value creation of IT seems to discount the intangible value creation that IT investments bring to organizations. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate and compare how HRIS users in two industries perceive the intangible value creation of HRIS. In order to answer the research question and fulfill the purpose of this study, a qualitative approach based on a constructivist grounded theory has been chosen as the research method. Nine semi- structured interviews with HRIS users from three companies within the hotel and IT industries have been conducted. The empirical findings suggest that different companies provide different training and support to their employees in order to utilize the system and that there are a majority of common themes between the value generated from HRIS in both industries, although this research reveals that the different perceptions of value creation mainly depends on the role within the company and the personal approach to utilizing different systems, rather than the industries. HRIS users from both industries perceive that HRIS is creating intangible value for the organizations. It has also been found that HRIS is mainly considered as a hygiene factor that indirectly brings value to the organization by enhancing the existing values within the organizations. HRIS users perceive the system as an enhancer of intangible values such as credibility for the organization, ownership, and responsibility for employees, more informed decision-making, proactive workforce planning, respectful handling of information about the employees and increased service quality.
