Abstract
With the underlying idea that vocabulary is seen as an essential part of language studies, this essay sought to find out how teachers of English in upper secondary schools in southern Sweden perceive of vocabulary teaching and learning, what methods for working with vocabulary are used in the English classroom, and how they relate their teaching of vocabulary to the syllabus for English. Next, the material was discussed and analysed with the help of the theoretical framework. The main findings of this study were that both previous research and the participants’ replies, no matter the
years in professional practice, emphasized the importance of vocabulary in the English classroom. Furthermore, a discrepancy was found between some of the participants’ views and what previous research has shown, when it came to choosing between incidental and intentional vocabulary teaching and learning. Finally, the results showed that there is an absence of explicit mention of vocabulary in the syllabus for English and that teachers request further clarifications
in the syllabus with regards to vocabulary. The somewhat limited scope of this essay also allowed for suggestions to further research. (Less)
