This essay aims to present new knowledge regarding the possibilities to apply the use of preparations when improvising, practicing and teaching piano. The method used in this essay is based on three parts, including (i) a personal process study of preparations while creating musically and in piano improvisation, (ii) an interview with the improvisational musician Sten Sandell, and (iii) a teaching lab consisting of three lessons with a piano student, inspired by action research. Liberating Timbre and Charged Silence – Preparations in Piano Improvisation as a Way Leading to Creative Didactics by Rui Hallvares Andrade Paes.

This essay aims to present new knowledge regarding the possibilities to apply the use of preparations when improvising, practicing and teaching piano. The method used in this essay is based on three parts, including (i) a personal process study of preparations while creating musically and in piano improvisation, (ii) an interview with the improvisational musician Sten Sandell, and (iii) a teaching lab consisting of three lessons with a piano student, inspired by action research. The process study is presented in the form of a catalogue with preparational tools and descriptions of what timbres the tools contribute to. The process study is put in a discussative declaration in relation to both historical and contemporary artistic usage of preparations in piano playing and composing. Furthermore, the process study is also discussed regarding former research on the subject area. In combination with the interview and the teaching lab, the findings from the process study lead to suggestions for creative didactics, rooted in an explorative work procedure with preparations and improvisation as its basis. Detta arbete syftar till att erbjuda ny kunskap om användningsmöjligheter av prepareringar i improvisation, övning och pianoundervisning.
