Thesis purpose: The study’s purpose is to contribute to the research field of knowledge sharing within MCNs by helping, advising and simplifying the knowledge sharing in cross-cultural virtual teams. This will be done through investigating how underlying factors can facilitate the relation between the aspects of knowledge sharing, cross-cultural collaboration and virtual communication.

Methodology: This study is based on the philosophy of social constructionism. A qualitative research strategy with an abductive approach has been adopted, as our thesis aims to build an improved understanding of the phenomenon of knowledge sharing.

Theoretical perspective: Our theoretical framework is based on research within the field of knowledge sharing, cross-cultural collaboration and virtual communication.

Empirical data: The empirical material consists of twelve observations and fifteen semi-structured interviews with managers and employees from cross-cultural virtual teams. The data was presented in an analysis divided in two parts in order to first analyze the empirical material only based on the respondents' answers and then in relation to our theoretical framework.

Findings: The analysis of the empirical material allowed us to identify that the aspects of knowledge sharing, cross-cultural collaboration and virtual communication works in symbiosis with the aspects of relationship building within cross-cultural virtual teams. Furthermore, the findings have extended the understanding of how factors relating to the four aspects influence knowledge sharing and how they can be managed. Lastly, we also found that knowledge sharing should be viewed as two parts, one task oriented and one people oriented.

Practical implications: The study provides a framework of factors influencing the knowledge sharing of both task oriented and people oriented knowledge. Furthermore, the study provides concrete suggestions on how to manage the factors and thus facilitate knowledge sharing within cross-cultural virtual teams. (Less)
