(Less) - Abstract

Key words: Data collection, Perceived risk, Consumer impact, Big data, Marketing.
Research question: What affects consumers’ perceived risk to companies’ data collection?
Purpose: The study aims to investigate how consumers experience risk in companies’ digital
data collection and thus contribute to the existing research in data collection and risk. Thus, the
aim of this essay is to create a deeper understanding of consumers’ perceptions of data collection
and how they weigh the perceived risk against their digital actions.
Methodology: The thesis uses a qualitative method with an inductive approach. The selection is
a goal-oriented selection with a sequential approach. The interviews were semi-structured,
in-depth interviews with completely free answer alternatives to elicit the respondents’ opinions
and attitudes.
Theoretical perspectives: The study’s theoretical frame of reference consists of the theory of the
risk society (Beck, 2000), the definition of knowledge (Gustavsson, 2002), the definition of
power (Fiske, 1993), the theory of perceived power (Jia, Wyer Jr & Shen, 2021), Erden & Swaits
model of consumer-based branding (1998 in Dahlén, Lange & Rosengren, 2017) and Dahlén
Lange and Rosengren's (2017) explanation of approved, unknown and infamous brands.
Empirical foundation: The empiric consists of fifteen respondents’ knowledge, thoughts, and
ideas about the phenomenon of data collection and what their actions look like today.
Conclusions: The conclusion mainly consists of three overarching themes that affect the
respondents’ perceived risk to companies’ digital data collection, these are: knowledge,
perceived power, and trust in the brand. These themes turn out to be intertwined where personal
integrity is the linking parameter. (Less)
