Understanding Managerial Boundary Work in Multi-Actor Cross-Sectoral Collaborations - An Analysis of Project Managers of an Innovation Company in Sweden

- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to examine how innovation project managers enact boundary work to facilitate knowledge sharing and development in multi-actor cross-sectoral collaboration projects. A specific focus is thereby dedicated to the investigation of micro- processes of managerial boundary work happening within the project space. The theoretical ground for our research is provided by literature on collaborative and configurational boundary work as well as literature on knowledge boundaries. In addition, we draw on connected research on brokerage with regards to managers as boundary workers. This qualitative research is based on a single case study and empirical data from 10 semi-structured interviews and two online meeting... (More)

The theoretical ground for our research is provided by literature on collaborative and configurational boundary work as well as literature on knowledge boundaries. In addition, we draw on connected research on brokerage with regards to managers as boundary workers. This qualitative research is based on a single case study and empirical data from 10 semi-structured interviews and two online meeting observations. The research follows an abductive research approach and uses the tradition of interpretivism. We identified four boundary work practices that innovation project managers enact to create a project space in which cross-sectoral collaboration between the multiple actors can take place and which ultimately aim at facilitating knowledge sharing and development. Our study contributes to the literature stream on boundary work by investigating the concept in the scarcely researched context of cross- sectoral collaborations including public, private and academia and by giving deeper insights into the enactment of complex boundary work by innovation project managers.
