- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

- Abstract
- This study explores six music teachers’ thoughts and reasoning regarding how they teach students to practice. Additional topics examined include what methods teachers use to encourage independence and what other factors affect students’ practice. The study originated from the authors’ perception that the broader teaching community places insufficient emphasis on teaching effective instrument practice. The study was conducted through semi-structured interviews and has been analyzed through a hermeneutic lens. The informants were selected based on two criteria: they had to be active upper secondary school teachers and teach the subject “Instrument eller sång” in Swedish curriculum. The data was processed through thematic analysis, and the... (More)

The data was processed through thematic analysis, and the results revealed a broad consensus regarding the challenges teachers face and the actions needed to address them. The result shows that all informants experience challenges in having a meaningful effect on their students’ practicing. In the discussion, we examine whether time correlates with development and further discusses if encouraging time-based goals is productive. It also discusses the relationship with learning and independence. Conclusions indicate that the independence teachers try to develop in their students need to exist within the educational framework, that meaningful practice depends on understanding and goal-setting, and that independence develops through an ascending spiral.
