Abstract
In this paper we present and discuss some of the lessons learnt from the completed CoLabs.eu project within the so called R3L-initiative on European Networks of Learning Regions. In the project we made some concrete social experiments in order to “make the village a virtual campus”. We start this paper by making a general introduction to the research area and by giving the motivating background to the project. We then describe the objectives setup for the project related to learning regions and the third mission for universities and describe also in some details how the project was carried out in each regional case with some general remarks on the art of making the village a virtual campus. We then present and discuss the outcomes of the... (More)

We start this paper by making a general introduction to the research area and by giving the motivating background to the project. We then describe the objectives setup for the project related to learning regions and the third mission for universities and describe also in some details how the project was carried out in each regional case with some general remarks on the art of making the village a virtual campus. We then present and discuss the outcomes of the experiments with regional collaboratories and the general results achieved within the lifetime of the project. In the last part of the paper we discuss the results in more general terms and make some recommendations on how to make villages not only learning, but also innovative and creative, which indicates the need for a new framework for knowledge creation where place and people really matters.
