- Abstract (Swedish)
- Brazil has recently become the fifth largest producer and fourth largest exporter of cotton in the world. This success story is exceptional, as the Brazilian cotton production reached record low levels in the mid-1990s. Since then however, production has more than recovered owing to an impressive growth of 43 % during the last decade, which is high in comparison to the world average of 28 %. The purpose of this thesis is to gain knowledge about the underlying factors behind the recent success of the Brazilian cotton sector. Our findings suggests the emergence of a new sectors structure associated with higher coordination among the actors within the sectors together with an altered incentive structure for the producers are both key... Our findings suggests the emergence of a new sectors structure associated with higher coordination among the actors within the sectors together with an altered incentive structure for the producers are both key components in understanding this recent success. There are however still challenges to be solved and we thereby believe that further success will depend on how these challenges are met. (Less)
