- Abstract
- In the past five years, many Scanian cities have been hit hard by flood damages, especially in conurbation areas. A changed Scanian climate with increased annual rainfall and more downfalls during summer months, is expected to worsen the outcome of flood damages. Therefore, there is a great need for damage prevention activities and climate adaptation work with particular interest for insurance companies and water and sewage (WS) providers, to whom the consequences of a changed Scanian climate represents an economic threat. By studying Länsförsäkringar Skåne and selected WS providers in Scania, this study illustrates common driving forces, challenges and opportunities for cooperation in climate change adaptation and mitigation activities... By studying Länsförsäkringar Skåne and selected WS providers in Scania, this study illustrates common driving forces, challenges and opportunities for cooperation in climate change adaptation and mitigation activities related to flood damages on private property.
Insurance companies and WS providers both have interest in damage prevention and climate adaptation against flood damages. Flood damages also affect their common stakeholder, namely their customers. However, currently a great part of the communication between the two sector players occur when conflicting economic goals and responsibility for the damage incurred, is the essence of the communication. A major challenge is therefore to highlight common interests and incentives in order to find new ways and opportunities to expand the damage prevention activities. Results of my study show that there are prospects for cooperation between insurance companies and the WS providers with the aim of influencing the outcome of flood damages. (Less)
