Abstract (Swedish)
Since there is a lack of scientific knowledge concerning strategic thinking, this study sought to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of the concept. The presumption of the study is that one needs strategic thinking to deal with complex and unfamiliar situations. Since there is a lack of scientific knowledge concerning strategic thinking, this study sought to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of the concept. The presumption of the study is that one needs strategic thinking to deal with complex and unfamiliar situations. As globalisation is one main driving factor in the change of how business is run, there is an increased need for organisations to discover and recruit strategic thinking employees. Moreover, the purpose of this investigation was to identify the key cognitive elements of strategic thinking. Finally, as the CPP test is the only tool claiming to have the ability to measure individual’s strategic thinking ability, this research aimed to discover whether the collected data could contribute to the validation of the CPP assessment. The research questions were:
1. What are the most important cognitive elements of strategic thinking?
2. Can the collected data contribute towards the validation of CPP as a tool that measures strategic thinking?
In order to answer the proposed research questions of this study, data was collected through a mixed-method approach to gather both qualitative and quantitative data. The methods were conducted in three steps, firstly, by conducting a self-completion voting questionnaire, secondly, by conducting 360-degree structured telephone interviews, and finally, by testing individuals using the CPP assessment. The collected data was analysed using IBM SPSS.
The collected data did not contribute to the validation of the CPP assessment, however, there were some interesting discoveries. The investigation revealed that the prominent elements of strategic thinking for this particular case are analytical, context oriented, future oriented and visionary. Which implies that the company has varied understanding of strategic thinking as a concept. Moreover, other findings encourages further investigation concerning the connection between strategic thinking and diverse educational background. (Less)
