Abstract (Swedish)

(More)

(Less)
Abstract
When I had flute lessons at the community school of music and art, music was not valued according to genres. My experience was that several different genres were equally common in the lessons. When I later applied to Malmö Academy of Music, and had to choose a genre, this idea was disrupted and I asked myself what my role as a flute teacher would be. Should I specialize myself within a genre, or should I be able to teach a little of each?

The purpose of the study is to get a picture of flute educators ́ understanding of diverse genres in their teaching in the community school of music and art. The research questions are:

The purpose of the study is to get a picture of flute educators ́ understanding of diverse genres in their teaching in the community school of music and art. The research questions are:
• How to three flute educators in southern Sweden understand diversity of genres in
their teaching at the community school of music and art?
• What factors form the basis of the choice of genre(s) for flute lessons at the
community school of music and art?

The data collection has been done through qualitative interviews: three flute educators in southern Sweden have been interviewed.

In the literature review, there is a description of different genres and its characteristics, as well as a historical overview of the Swedish community school of music and art as an activity and how it functions today.

The result shows that all interviewed flute educators see a responsibility in presenting diverse genres in their flute teaching. They also see the orchestra as an opportunity to presenting new music to the students. Instead of choosing a repertoire based on genre, the teachers often choose music that is idiomatic to the flute and that is easily accessible to the students. Even the pupil's or the educator's musical taste plays a role in the selection of the repertoire. To what degree their musical tastes influence the selection of repertoire is different among the informants. (Less)
