Results

Two main themes emerged as the third order interpretation, ‘Issues to address’ and ‘Consequences’.

Issues to address included the sub-themes; ‘Purpose’, ‘Roles’, and ‘Support and Structure’, while ‘Consequences’ included the sub-themes ’Challenges and Enablers’ and ‘Gains’.

Conclusion

The role of the student as an active reflective learner and the role of the supervisor as a facilitator for learning need to be emphasised. When introducing a portfolio to dental education the need of clarity of purpose, working on attitudes and behaviour is important.

E-portfolios needs to be “user-friendly”, structured and organized in a way enabling the use in a busy learning environment, easy to access: both for information input and for analysis of previous feedback and reflections.

Concerning challenges, both time issues, technical and pedagogical aspects and hidden curriculum was found. However, enablers like being timely, well-structured and providing a platform for professional, personal learning and development were identified.

Gains like improved reflective skills were expressed and the time spent was seen as well invested. (Less)
