Interfaces with syntax in language acquisition
(2016) In Manuals of Romance Linguistics 10. p.551-586- Abstract
- We introduce empirical work on Romance language acquisition withrespect to the interfaces of syntax with other modules of grammar (internal interfaces)and other domains of cognition (external interfaces). We do so by choosing specificphenomena within the following interfaces: syntax-morphology, syntax-semanticsand syntax-pragmatics. In the domain of syntax-morphology we focus on grammaticalgender, with respect to the syntax-semantics interface we focus on adjectival place-ment (pre- and post-nominal) and with regard to the syntax-discourse/pragmaticsinterface we review work on the null/overt subject distribution. Finally, we summarizeresearch on articles, suggesting that articles represent a multiple interface. We provideexamples from... (More)

We provideexamples from different types of learners and across the four major Romancelanguages French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. While our central goal is tosummarize and generalize across majorfindings, we will also point to potentialproblems concerning the interface approach, e.g. the association of particular phe-nomena with a specific interface and the assumption that internal interfaces areless problematic than external ones.
