Insights from a vendor managed inventory implementation in an industrial context
(2005) 10th International symposium of Logistics, 2005- Abstract
- Researchers have asked for practical examples of collaborative supply chain initiatives like VMI and how they are designed. Especially cases in other industrial settings than retail are rare. One important question to answer is how well these initiatives are working in other settings and how they could be designed to improve supply chain efficiency. The objective of this paper is to give a description of an empirical case where VMI has been implemented in an industrial setting, in order to get a deeper understanding of the concept in a different context and to give suggestions for further research. The case design, implementation and early evaluation process will be described and discussed based on a theoretical foundation provided by... (More)
- Researchers have asked for practical examples of collaborative supply chain initiatives like VMI and how they are designed. Especially cases in other industrial settings than retail are rare. The objective of this paper is to give a description of an empirical case where VMI has been implemented in an industrial setting, in order to get a deeper understanding of the concept in a different context and to give suggestions for further research. The case design, implementation and early evaluation process will be described and discussed based on a theoretical foundation provided by other researchers in the field. The findings from the case indicates that even though a holistic win-win purpose was stated for the relationship, the development of VMI systems would benefit from using both parties interests in the pilot design. The supplier processes was not counted for when designing the initial system and there is a trade off between easy-to-implement technical solutions and the efficiency of special designed solutions.
