Thermal management in a high speed switched reluctance machine for traction applications

Márquez-Fernández, F. J. LU orcid ; Potgieter, J. H.J. ; Fraser, A. G. and McCulloch, M. D. (2016) 8th IET International Conference on Power Electronics, Machines and Drives, PEMD 2016 In IET Conference Publications 2016(CP684).
Abstract

Thermal design of electric traction machines for high performance HEV drivetrains is a challenging task. Unlike conventional HEV traction machines, these machines are subject to continuous operation at or near their thermal limits during race-track driving, and so thermal management is of paramount importance to the mass and size of the machine. This article presents the main challenges related to the thermal management of a novel high speed switched reluctance machine topology for a high performance sport car, as well as the different approaches considered to address them. The article focuses on the stator of the machine, assuming that the rotor will be cooled by convection.
