Structural Mechanics: Modelling and Analysis of Frames and Trusses

Olsson, Karl-Gunnar LU and Dahlblom, Ola LU (2016)
Abstract
This textbook in structural mechanics is based on the methodology of the finite element method. The understanding of basic elements of structural mechanics - springs, bars, beams and foundations - is gradually built up in one, two and three dimensions. Using these elements it is demonstrated how complex load-bearing structures can be modelled and analysed. Methods for linear as well as geometric and material nonlinear analyses are presented. In order to highlight the generality of the described methodology, a short section that addresses other areas of applied mechanics such as thermal conduction, moisture diffusion and groundwater flow is included.

Three key learning objectives are supported: (1) knowledge of the basic theory of structural mechanics; (2) skills in modelling and analysis of structures and (3) ability to evaluate and improve the efficiency of proposed structural configurations in a design process.

Key features:

- Deals with modelling and analysis of trusses and frames using a systematic matrix formulated displacement method with the language and flexibility of the finite element method

- Element matrices are established from analytical solutions to the differential equations

- Provides a strong toolbox with elements and algorithms for computational modelling and numerical exploration of truss and frame structures

- Discusses the concept of stiffness as a qualitative tool to explain structural behaviour

- Includes numerous exercises, for some of which the computer software CALFEM is used. In order to support the learning process CALFEM gives the user full overview of the matrices and algorithms used in a finite element analysis
