Globalization and the capacity of violence to transform social spaces: Some critical points about the Latin America debate

Cuadra, Sergio LU (2003) In Crime, Law and Social Change 39(2). p.163-173
Abstract
The aim of this study is to try and explain the relationship between violence and the changes taking place in social spaces. Violence, in all its dimensions, has taken a central place in Latin American social life and has become an almost totally private issue. This implies a series of spatial and social transformations in the cities. The new effects of violence influence social and ethnic segregation and seem to operate in similar ways in different societies. This motivates a comparative analysis of the security services situation in different countries. Such a comparison will allow us obtain a better vision of the effects of violence as social facts and will allow planning future comparisons with other regions easier.
