Postglacial adaptations
(2024) 1. p.150-163- Abstract
- The evolution of human adaptations across diverse geographical regions has been shaped by dynamic interplays between environmental demands and cultural evolution throughout millennia. During the Pleistocene epoch, cultural variations were relatively uniform globally, harmonizing with the Ice Age climate that created vast analogous environments. At the end of the Late Pleistocene—the start of the Holocene, a gradual transformation occurred. Human cultures diversified in response to localized population pressures, shifting cultural and societal requisites, and the fragmentation of once-homogeneous environments into smaller, region-specific biomes with distinct climates, flora, and fauna. By the onset of the Holocene, human societies spanned... (More)

By the onset of the Holocene, human societies spanned the globe, showcasing a rich tapestry of cultural diversity. This chapter provides a broad exploration of global postglacial human trajectories, complemented by an in-depth examination of Early Holocene Scandinavia. The narrative underscores the multifaceted nature of human adaptations, highlighting the nuances of progressions, regressions, and transformations of human societies that thrived due to their adaptive capacities and developed into unique cultures because of the diversity of the implemented responses.
