Chest pain in the emergency department - risk assessment, diagnostics, and outcomes
(2025) In Lund University, Faculty of Medicine Doctoral Dissertation Series- Abstract
- Chest pain is one of the most common reasons for emergency department (ED) visits. Extensive diagnostic testing is often performed to identify acute coronary syndrome (ACS), but only about 10% of patients ultimately receive an ACS diagnosis. These diagnostic processes are costly, time-consuming, and sometimes invasive, carrying inherent risks. Additionally, most patients with suspected ACS are admitted to the cardiac care unit (CCU) out of concern for serious complications, despite the high costs
and limited availability of hospital beds. This highlights the urgent need for improved risk stratification.
