This thesis begins to explore the role of context and context adaptation in traffic management change processes to increase knowledge on how organizational change can be managed more successfully.

The empirical context for this thesis is The Swedish Transport Administration, specifically Business area Traffic management, and include change processes that affect traffic control centres including road and rail traffic management. Traffic management, monitoring traffic and infrastructure facilities and providing information about the traffic situation, is a key societal function to ensure functioning travel and transportation in Sweden.

The research in this thesis consists of a systematic literature review and an interview study. The literature review focus on how context is discussed in the change management literature, and how change management practices can be adapted to the context. The interview study focuses on how managers and employees perceive the change context and how managers and employees adapt change processes to the context.

This thesis makes important contributions, both theoretical and practical, to a research area benefiting society. The theoretical contribution concerns context and context adaptation within traffic management. The practical implications include a framework for context adaptation that may be useful for change management practitioners within traffic management and corresponding contexts.
