Global Ideas, Local Discourses: Private Education in the People's Republic of China
(2009) Comparative and International Education Society 53rd Annual Conference (CIES)- Abstract
- The paper will give a brief overview of developments and strategies in the private education sector in the People's Republic of China. The focus of the presentation will be on the question of how globally migrating ideas about marketization and privatization of education are reflected, negotiated, and (partly) transformed in the Chinese context. It will be demonstrated that ideas and practices of 'private education', despite their global ubiquity, are re-formulated and thus re-created by local actors, who are part of specific social (locally and globally operating) networks and specific discursive alliances. Particular attention will be paid to Chinese cross-references to the Chilean and Indian context.
