Sustainable accessibility : last-mile SC challenges and opportunities in B2C renting models
(2022) CSCMP European research seminar 2022- Abstract
- Achieving sustainable development and achieving Agenda 2030 goals requires drastic socio-technical changes, where one of the main challenges is to shift from the dominant linear and transaction-based business logic to a logic of circularity and resource-maximization. In the circular economy era, there are a growing number of actors offering consumers the opportunity to rent products instead of buying and owning these. The purpose of this paper is to explore and define the last mile supply chain challenges and opportunities in B2C rental models and provide a framework for further research to take on in order to design and implement sustainable accessibility of consumer goods. Based on a design science based research approach, in-depth... (More)

The purpose of this paper is to explore and define the last mile supply chain challenges and opportunities in B2C rental models and provide a framework for further research to take on in order to design and implement sustainable accessibility of consumer goods. Based on a design science based research approach, in-depth studies have been carried out together with rental companies, logistics service providers and refurbishing actors on the concept of sustainable accessibility. Field tests were performed in which logistics set-ups and packaging concepts were tested with consumers, throughout the product flow from the retailer via logistics service providers to consumers and then back again after usage via refurbishment and new rentals. The paper proposes a framework addressing the central and critical factors to consider in the set-up of circular economy driven supply chains with emphasis on the downstream center of gravity emerging in the circular era.
