- A study of 25 pupils working in groups with a digital mathematics game on table tablets
was conducted in a Swedish first school year class. The pupils’ communications and actions when
solving problems, with no teacher interference, were studied to contribute knowledge about how
groups of pupils engage in digital games. Data sets, in the form of transcripts from video recordings of
pupils working in groups, were thematically analyzed based on mathematical competencies. The results show that most of the pupils’ activities were within mathematics and most of the rest of the time
was spent on other aspects of the activity, particularly the order of turns. The game worked as support

for mathematics problem solving and mathematics reasoning occurred in the groups. Pupils’ learning
obstacles were often in relation to operating the game. (Less)
