Abstract
Does the human animal have an exclusive access to the realm of religious devo-
tion? While both scholars and scientists are beginning to speak of and recognize
agency among nonhuman species, we have yet to explore the field of nonhuman
religiosity. The following article takes a first step in this direction by exploring
how especially Ambrose of Milan, in his Hexaemeron sermons, ascribed religious
agency to birds
