Two Leonardo Pilot Projects-Developing Internet Based Learning Programs within Geographical Information Systems (GIS), ICEE2008

- Under the Leonardo da Vinci – Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP) – there is a sub-programme, Transfer of Innovation (ToI). ToI is funding projects which further develop previous project outcomes.
This paper deals with a new pilot project under ToI, eGIS+, which has received funding for two years (2007 – 2009). eGIS+ further develop a previous pilot project, E-GIS (European Level Developments of Flexible Learning Models within Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for Vocational training), which was successfully implemented 2002 -2006.

GIS, Geographical Information Systems, is a computer –based tool for handling and analysing digital map data to which are connected attribute data (spatially dependent phenomena), for statistical treatment – such as resource- and environmental planning, transport logistics, registration of archaelogical findings etc. There are great needs for competence development within GIS in society. The main aim of the E-GIS was to establish a co-operation between European Universities and GIS user organisations in order to develop modularised courses inteded for Internet based learning. The project outcomes were considered very successful.
In the E-GIS project 10 partners from 6 European countries (Bulgaria, Lithuania, The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Portugal) developed a study programme within Geographical Information Systems; resulting in 8 course modules for 100% Internet based learning, corresponding to one year full time study. The course outline were flexible in study pace (open start and end), study mode (online, CD ROM) and material format (text, video, audio and interactive tools) at individual choices.
The objectives of eGIS+ are to target an even broader range of GIS user groups, to test new Learning Management Systems (LMS) and different software for development of course material, translate course material into partner languages, create a large variety of course modules of different duration (modules from just a few minutes duration, without credits, up to 10 ECTS) and to create flexibility to a larger extent.
During the new eGIS+ project, 10 partners from 8 European countries are involved. All University partners from E-GIS joined again plus new partners from Greece and Poland. The project proposal was accepted and eGIS+ was born. (Less)
