The constant fluidity and change in their environment has led many researchers to question many of their assumptions about tourism and reassess the relevance of their work, not only in terms of policy and other applications, but also, more fundamentally, to revisit the ways in which the subject is theorised and conceptualized. This introductory chapter is divided into two further sections. First, an account is presented of some of the issues surrounding the conceptualisation of tourism and, hence, its study. Second, a discussion of some of the key themes and issues which have emerged in the institutionalisation of tourism as a field of social scientific endeavour.
