Standardizing the Quantification of the Energy Performance Gap in Buildings

Odeh, Khaleel ; Elroy, Lori Mc and de Wilde, Pieter LU orcid (2025) 19th IBPSA Conference on Building Simulation, BS 2025 In Building Simulation Conference Proceedings 19.
Abstract

Recent research efforts highlight the challenges associated with accurately assessing the true magnitude of the energy performance gap in buildings. Uncertainties in both predictions and measurements raise questions about the extent of the gap, its implications, and whether it is narrowing or widening. Typically, the gap is quantified by comparing measured data with various energy benchmarks and targets, including simulation outputs; however, such comparisons often lack standardized procedures. This paper aims to explore the potential of a standardized methodology to assess the phenomenon and presents findings from experts within the building energy simulation community. It highlights key challenges in standardizing the assessment of... (More)

This paper aims to explore the potential of a standardized methodology to assess the phenomenon and presents findings from experts within the building energy simulation community. It highlights key challenges in standardizing the assessment of the gap and suggests practical alternatives based on expert insights.
