Lessons learned about openness : EndNote course as an open learning resource
(2023) LU Open Science Days- Abstract
- Background: In a workshop about working with the Canvas learning platform, three librarians at Lund University started a project to create a resource for the reference management program EndNote. We started in January 2020 and launched our Canvas course with EndNote X9 in August 2020. In 2021, the entire course was updated to adapt to EndNote 20 and we also added an English version due to request.

Purpose: The purpose was to cover a gap, as we lacked Swedish instructional videos. The idea was to use it as a supplement to our regular teaching. With the pandemic, the conditions for teaching changed. It became natural to develop the instructional videos into an independent resource where you can learn EndNote from scratch on your own. From the beginning it was intended as a resource for Lund University, but we quickly realized that more people could use what we had done and made the resource open and shareable for everyone.
Method: We used Camtasia and Canvas Studio to do screen recordings and edits, and Canvas Studio to text. PowerPoint was used as the basis for the films.
Lessons Learned: In our poster we will present lessons learned and how we thought about generic content, updates and Creative Commons licensing and how to best spread your open learning resource and make it useful to others. (Less)
