- According to the World Health Organization Wheelchair Provision Guidelines (2023) wheelchair training is a critical component of the wheelchair provision process. In fact, the guidelines ‘strongly recommend’ that training for power and manual wheelchairs needs to be provided to enable maximum use and prevent abandonment and secondary injuries. Moreover, task-specific training is particularly encouraged when meeting the learning needs of children, people who are at risk of secondary complications, and individuals with cognitive impairments as a few examples of the need for tailoring training to people and their related situation. In this session experts in the field of power and manual wheelchair skill training will present clinically relevant data related to research on training for children and adults including individuals with cognitive impairment. The presentations will include training approaches that use technology, peer supported programs for training, and tailored knowledge translation resources as examples. Presentations will be followed by an interactive question and answer discussion with audience members.
