(2026) MULM75 20261Malmö Academy of Music
- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- In this study, we put focus on a particular pedagogic approach among jazz teachers that we’ve encountered during our studies in jazz. This approach is characterized by giving students space to form their own studies and to develop the student’s independence through self-learning. Because of the historical bond that jazz shares with USA and because of the strong contrast within the character of the pedagogic approach described above and an American approach within jazz pedagogics we have decided to compare pedagogical perspectives with each other.
In this study we try to map out the influences that values surrounding the jazz genre have on teachers’ and students’ relation to improvisational studies. The questions that this thesis poses...
The questions that this thesis poses are: (i) How do teachers and students relate to jazz improvisational studies in relation to the American educational idiom? (ii) How do teachers and students relate to jazz improvisational studies in relation to the scandinavian educational idiom? (iii) What expectations do teachers and students have toward each other and themselves within jazz improvisational studies? In this thesis we have done qualitative semi-structured interviews with three instrumental teachers and one of their students each, where we compare their thoughts about improvisational studies in relation to the values that we relate to American education in jazz and Swedish education in jazz, respectively. Our conclusion is that these values have an impact on how students and teachers relate and reason about jazz and improvisation. The result also shows how these values can coexist within an individual, which can be seen in the way that the informants sometimes express ambivalence in their opinions when these values collide. We believe that raising awareness in the way that these values influences and where they come from might help teachers and students to easier relate to the genre, teaching and each other. (Less)
