Abstract
Introduction: The aim of the research is a cyclometallation reaction to form two different complexes. The complexes are formed through the activation of two different ligands, one through the activation of a C-H bond in a cyclohexane based POCOP ligand and one through the activation pf a C-C bond in a biphenyl ligand. This activation would be done using two different metals for the reaction, palladium for the activation of the C-H bond and Iridium for the C-C activation.
Background: The possibility of C-C activation of a sp2 bond is very enticing as it would open up a lot of possibilities in synthetic terms. It would provide endless possibilities for manipulation of sp2 bonds thus changing the functionality of such bonds.
Aim(s): Achieve... (More)

Background: The possibility of C-C activation of a sp2 bond is very enticing as it would open up a lot of possibilities in synthetic terms. It would provide endless possibilities for manipulation of sp2 bonds thus changing the functionality of such bonds.
Aim(s): Achieve a activation of a C-C bond via a oxidative addition of the C-C sp2 bond in a biphenyl system to a metal centre. There is also a hope of forming a cyclometallated product via the C-H activation of the central carbon in a cyclohexane based ligand without beta-blocking the ligand.
Methods: To accomplish the ligand synthesis a Straus flasks was be used as well as performing the experiments under an inert atmosphere via a glovebox and a Schlenk line. The reactions were then monitored using NMR spectroscopy. Structures of one of the synthesised ligands was determined via X-ray crystallography
Results: There was a successful synthesis of a novel ligand and potential activation of the C-C bond using [Ir(COD)Cl]2 and H2. However no conclusive evidence of the potentially formed cyclometallated products or the complex obtained via a C-C activation was found.
Conclusion: With the current method used there is potentially polymerisation during the reaction causing a loss of phosphorous signals and a clear formation of a precipitate. There is a formation of metal phosphorous bonds in the C-H activation as there is a formation of virtual triplets in the tert-butyl group signals in the 1H NMR spectra of the product but no clear evidence was found of a cyclometallated product.
