Abstract
This thesis explores the relationship between certain concepts of learning and some parts of the Swedish language program for immigrants (SFI). The aim of the study is to relate theories of learning to current pedagogical SFI-research, teachers’ perception of learning theories and, to investigate which learning theories teachers consider to be the most useful in their everyday tutoring.

I used a mix method approach, analyzing two parts. First a literature study compares current SFI-research in Sweden with theories of learning. Secondly, the paper analyzes the perception of learning of SFI-teachers, in two steps: (i) A pilot study was made containing three in-depth interviews with SFI-teachers discussing their view on learning. Secondly, the paper analyzes the perception of learning of SFI-teachers, in two steps: (i) A pilot study was made containing three in-depth interviews with SFI-teachers discussing their view on learning. (ii) Next a survey was created to understand which learning theories SFI-teachers think they are in need of in their every-day teaching.

In conclusion, the thesis argues that current SFI-research puts emphasis on the sociocultural dimensions of learning. It also discusses in what way teaching can be related to theories of learning. And lastly, the survey shows that SFI-teachers need and want to use the emotional dimension of learning in a better way. (Less)
