Abstract (Swedish)

(Less)
Abstract
In this study, we investigate the experiences and effects of our own original pedagogical material for choirs. Previous research has shown that many choirs today still hold onto restrictive gender norms that make the activity less inclusive for people who do not fit into these norms, especially transgender people. We have therefore constructed a pedagogical material with the aim of making norm-critical and norm-creative work, with a particular focus on gender norms, accessible for choirs, and to see if this could bring about any change in attitudes. The material consists of exercises that are interwoven into regular choir practice during three rehearsals.

This mixed methods study aims to answer questions about how choirs experience the material, its accessibility, measure its effect on attitudes towards critical pedagogy and gender norms, and compare the results between the different choirs. Two choirs, consisting of choir directors and choristers, have implemented the material, however, one had to conclude before the last session could be completed due to external factors. Data was collected from both choirs using two surveys, one that collected quantitative data on the choristers' attitudes towards gender norms and critical pedagogy with a retrospective post-test design, and one that collected qualitative data on the choir directors' experiences of working with the pedagogical material.
The qualitative results indicate that the material has yielded many fruitful discussions about what is assumed based on norms, what a choir implicitly communicates, and the impact of gender norms on social groups. The quantitative results show some improvement in choristers’ attitudes but are overall inconclusive, which may be due to the design of the survey. The authors recommend further research on how work related to inclusion can be made accessible and relevant for choirs. (Less)
