Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

Abstract
The study examines how boys in a senior high school with a focus on music experience what it is like to study in a senior high school and how this differs from their primary school years. The work has a clear gender perspective where I try to understand why boys generally perform worse than girls in primary school and if it changes when they study at the senior high school. My purpose is to understand what the boys experience during their school days and how I as a teacher can work to affirm positive development. The work has a clear gender perspective where I try to understand why boys generally perform worse than girls in primary school and if it changes when they study at the senior high school. My purpose is to understand what the boys experience during their school days and how I as a teacher can work to affirm positive development. The data collection took place through interviews with three students who studies their first year at a senior high school in Lund. My interview questions focused on what the boys feel that the environment expects of them but also what the boys expect from their teachers and classmates. The results show that boys experience a difference from the slightly messy and hard primary school period to a more calm and motivating high school period. The informants also get to reason about their experiences of studying in a boy-dominated environment and how they create a good study environment. The result was positively surprising as the students seem to thrive and study more diligently in high school than earlier in their lives. The study largely confirms previous research indicating that younger boys develop later than girls and therefore it seems likely that boys have more difficulty organizing their own learning during primary school. When the boys get a little older and mature, there are clear indications that the inner motivation becomes stronger and when they get to make choices that tendency increases because they also take greater responsibility for their schooling.
