Modelling of power flow and losses in a conductive Electric Road System
(2022) 2022 IEEE Vehicle Power and Propulsion Conference, VPPC 2022 In 2022 IEEE Vehicle Power and Propulsion Conference, VPPC 2022 - Proceedings- Abstract
As the market share of electric vehicles increases, the need for a charging infrastructure increases correspondingly. Modern Electric Road Systems is a cost effective charging infrastructure that allows electric vehicles to charge while driving and consequently allowing for smaller batteries in EVs. To assess the potential of electric road system technology, a demonstrator of conductive electric road developed by Elonroad has been built in Lund, Sweden. Electric measurements from the demonstrator are used in this paper to develop and validate a simulation model of the demonstrator. The aim of the simulation model is to assess power flows, losses and efficiency of different electric road system designs. In addition, the model allows for... (More)
As the market share of electric vehicles increases, the need for a charging infrastructure increases correspondingly. In addition, the model allows for investigating the impact of electric road length, traffic load, transformer and rectifier specifications. The simulation model is validated using two different measured charging events where a modified trolley bus is charging while driving on the demonstrator. The validation results show that the simulation model has high accuracy. To further demonstrate the capabilities of the simulation model a simulation case is presented with two electric cars and one electric bus charging on an electric road. The results show that the simulation model can be used to assess losses and efficiency connected to traffic flow, vehicle types as well as additional electric road system design aspects.
