- Abstract
- This commentary uses the final season of Stranger Things as a point of departure for reflecting on contemporary ideas about the purpose of education. Drawing on Gert Biesta’s distinction between qualification, socialisation and subjectification, it discusses how current debates about the crisis of schooling tend to privilege measurable knowledge, performance and order, while leaving little room for subjectification. The text argues for the importance of schools as spaces where students can encounter the world and themselves through experimentation, reflection and productive disruption – a form of “good chaos”.
