- Abstract
- The effect of external electron acceptors, i.e. fructose and oxygen, on the growth and metabolism of L. reuteri DSM 17938 was analysed using spectrophotometry, HPLC, carbon balance, metabolic flux analysis, enzyme assays and bioinformatics. This strain does not produce much hydrogen peroxide even when 400ml/L air is sparged through the culture. The results revealed that oxygen is not a superior electron acceptor to fructose for this strain. Metabolic flux analysis showed that sugars are metabolised for over 90% via the PKP.
- Popular Abstract
- Probiotics are basically “good bacteria”. The technical definition is “Probiotics are live microorganisms which, when administrated in
adequate amounts, confer health benefit on host”. Probiotics are best to consume with food products because the food bilayer protect bacteria from the low pH in the stomach, so it can travel alive to the large intestine.
