- ABSTRACT: Introduction / Rationale: The idea to facilitate development and learning originated from research engaging children and adults with profound cognitive disabilities in powered wheelchair practice (Driving to Learn). Later elaborations led to the development of the tool Assessment of Learning Process (ALP) including the facilitating approach. - ABSTRACT: Introduction / Rationale: The idea to facilitate development and learning originated from research engaging children and adults with profound cognitive disabilities in powered wheelchair practice (Driving to Learn). Later elaborations led to the development of the tool Assessment of Learning Process (ALP) including the facilitating approach. Objectives: To increase the understanding of the facilitating essentials described in existing publications on Driving to Learn and the ALP tool, to extract the key aspects of the approach Methods / Approach: A directed qualitative literature review with a reflexive thematic content analysis of data, carried out by three occupational therapists, one of the originators, one clinician with extensive knowledge and experience of application, and one researcher with wide-ranging knowledge of the approach. Results / Implications: The preliminary analysis indicate that the approach focuses on being active in collaboration and therapist and person meeting each other as subject to subject. Among the seven emerging aspects considered as essential are using dialogue and mutuality to achieve change, development and learning about doing in partnership, person to person. Conclusion / Significance to the occupational therapy profession: The innovative universal ALP facilitating approach is focused on collaboration in partnership. It can be applied in any context or situation where an occupational therapist needs a strategy for how to increase understanding, develop and maintain abilities, and doing of activities. Contexts cover a variety of situations in health care, education, community services, workplaces. (Less)
