A Review of International Approaches for Development of Climate Reference Periods – for Hygrothermal Analysis of Buildings

Abstract

In recent years, Sweden has seen substantial changes to its building designs, especially regarding the envelope and ventilation systems, across both renovations and new constructions. Although enhancements like better insulation and new building materials have boosted energy efficiency, they have also led to moisture-related problems such as stains, mold, and decay. To address these issues, heat and moisture transfer simulations are used for damage assessments, relying on climate data and often utilizing a Moisture Reference Year (MRY). The outcomes will contribute to establishing a Moisture Design Period (MDP) customized for Sweden, enhancing the durability and sustainability of its buildings.
