- Abstract
- This commentary discusses problematic school absenteeism and questions explanations that locate the problem primarily within the individual child. Drawing on Barbro Lindgren’s novel Jättehemligt, contemporary debate and research on school absenteeism, it highlights the importance of relationships, supportive adults and gradual pathways back to school. The article argues that prolonged absence should be understood in relation to the interaction between a child’s capacities and the demands of the school environment, rather than as an individual failure or choice.
