Lloyd, Andy and Forsyth, Rachel LU orcid (2024) p.123-135
Abstract

A 2015 review of external examining in the UK assessed the effectiveness of the external examining system in safeguarding academic and quality standards in higher education. The development of the Professional Development Course for External Examiners was a key response to the recommendations from this review. A 2015 review of external examining in the UK assessed the effectiveness of the external examining system in safeguarding academic and quality standards in higher education. The development of the Professional Development Course for External Examiners was a key response to the recommendations from this review. This chapter contains an overview of the structure of the course, the key messages communicated and the nature of the activities that were designed to engage participants with these ideas. The course needed to be made available as widely as possible and this required a flexible approach to the design and delivery. The course was made available with different structures and combinations of online and face-to-face elements. It was also important to distribute commitment to and ownership of the course across universities; to achieve this, institutions were supported to implement the course themselves, using a ‘develop the developers’ model to prepare colleagues in any university to offer it. There is a review of the challenges and benefits of developing a course for participants from all disciplinary areas, with varied professional experiences of standards, and who teach and examine in different types of institution.
