Bimodal convergence : How languages interact in multicompetent language users’ speech and gestures
(2022) In Language and the Human Lifespan (LHLS) p.317-333- Abstract
- A central issue in studies of second and foreign language acquisition and of bilingualism is to understand what happens when two or more languages come into contact within a person, a domain often referred to as crosslinguistic influence. This chapter begins with an introduction to the notion of convergence and outlines some key theoretical issues and empirical findings. It introduces bimodal convergence, the semantic domain of motion used as a test case, and offers some methodological remarks on the types of analyses performed to examine it. The chapter presents examples of studies that have examined intermediate speakers of a second language (L2), as well as fully functional bilinguals. It discusses potential convergence in... (More)

It discusses potential convergence in multicompetent users of a signed and a spoken language (bimodal bilinguals). The chapter concludes with a discussion of the implications for L2/bilingualism studies to consider bimodal data and a call for gesture studies to consider convergence. (Less)
