Abstract
This study focuses on the Swedish high-stadium (grade 7-9 of the Swedish school system) music teaching and examines how teachers teach class ensembles. Class ensemble refers to the form of teaching in which a class of at least fifteen students plays together, and where it is usually the case that several students play the same type of instrument. The study has two focus areas. The first one is to investigate how class ensemble relate to differentiated instruction, a concept that involves adapting the teaching to the students' different abilities, interests, and learning profiles. The second area of focus is to examine the difference between letting the students in the class ensemble shift between different instruments or to give them the... (More)

The study consists of semi-structured interviews with four music teachers who have a class ensemble as a common teaching element. The most important result of the study is a recommendation to the field of music education, to give students the opportunity to specialize in an instrument in high-stadium music teaching, partly because this means an increased degree of differentiated instruction. Abstract (Swedish)
