Positionality statements in engineering education : a European perspective
(2025) In Journal of Engineering Education 114(3).- Abstract
- In this editorial, we discuss why disclosure of many aspects commonly seen in positionality statements may be problematic given the cultural and legal context surrounding personal information in Europe, and the unequal distribution of required bravery, experienced burdens and barriers. We summarize current norms and problems with requiring labels, and suggest that, rather than disclosing identity facets, the focus should be on reflections on their impact, and it is only the conclusions of these reflections that should be disclosed. We contextualize our discussion where relevant, using boldface to indicate where we are stating our positionality.
